News and Events: The Monthly General Meeting and social was held at Dublin Square on October 13th 2006 at 6 pm. Finger Food (Sub Sandwiches and Fried Chicken) was available courtesy of Celts of America prior to the meeting. The first order of business was the nomination and vote for the empty Board of Directors seat. The only nominee was Gary Hamilton. A vote by the members present was held and Gary was unanimously approved. Congratulations Gary! The final empty seat will be voted on at the November meeting. Samhain (Halloween, see Samhain below) will be held at Dublin Square in the Radisson Hotel downtown Rapid City from 7 pm on October 28th. All are welcome to share in the potluck dinner sponsored by Celts Of America and the Scottish/Irish Society jointly. All culinary creations will be gratefully received. Some of the Celtic fare will include Shepherds Pie and Irish Shortbread. Participants are encouraged to come in fancy dress. There will be several contests centered on these costumes. Celts of America have started plans for the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. We are asking for anyone who knows of entertainment groups both musical, dance and pipes who may be willing and able to entertain to contact our office staff between 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday Through Saturday (excluding holidays). Tel: (605) 381-9133. or e-mail at submit@celtsofamerica.org Saint Patrick’s Day
is fast approaching and we have tentatively booked the conference rooms
at the Radisson Hotel for this party of parties. Although planning is in
the earliest stages we are confident this will be a day to remember. So
mark your calendars on Saturday, March 17th.
The Board of Directors
has made a change to the scholarship prerequisites and this was presented
at the general meeting. After discussing our plans for the next year’s
scholarships with several school councilors in the local area. It was decided
to lower the required GPA (Grade Point Average) to 3.25 from 3.5. This
is an effort to reach the greatest range of students who need scholarships.
The selection method has been changed to promote as much fairness as possible.
Each student competing must submit an essay on some aspect of Celtic heritage
to the scholarship committee. The essays will be received by a non-voting
committee member who will remove any reference to the student’s identity.
The essays will be reviewed by the committee and graded. The committee
will not know the identity of the competing student until the reviews are
complete.
